Color and Memory

IMG_5593.jpg

Proust is famous for highlighting the essential connectedness of taste/smell and memory. But color perception lives in the same part of the brain that smell does. Color can be just as powerful a trigger to memories and most of us can recall different aspects of our lives by the colors we encounter whether we realize it or not.

In fact some of what we experience when we respond with pleasure or discomfort to a color has to do with conscious or unconscious memories of that color. I first discovered that my favorite color is green because my very first memories of being surrounded by and immersed in color come from memories in nature.
